You don't have to wait for October to enjoy the spooky season. In fact, horror film and television aficionados like us tend to crave the thrill of a good scare all year long. From gore fests and haunting encounters to existential horrors, there's no shortage of hair-raising content.

Anaconda

Jenny from the Block trades the Bronx for the Amazon River, but this adventure is anything but a scenic cruise. Starring Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Owen Wilson and Jon Voight, the movie follows a documentary film crew in search of a long-lost tribe. As the filmmakers travel deep into the Brazilian rain forest, they encounter a mysterious stranger who claims he can lead them to their destination. Trusting a man you've just met with your life seems pretty safe, right? Not quite. Taking the boat hostage, the guy leads them on a quest to hunt for a dangerous anaconda.

Get in loser, we're going on a reign of terror. In this John Carpenter film, based on the Stephen King novel, Arnie (Keith Gordon) is an unpopular and awkward teenager just trying to survive the social ecosystem of high school. After buying an old 1958 Plymouth Fury nicknamed "Christine," the teen's life takes an abrupt turn. The more time he spends with Christine, the more Arnie begins to transform from a sheepish geek into an arrogant 1950s greaser. The red and white Fury is no fairy godmother, however. Arnie disovers that his car has a life of her own as she begins to terrorize and kill his enemies with her supernatural powers. You'll need more than just a seatbelt to survive this terrifying ride.

In this Edwardian-era England story, Edith (Mia Wasikowska) marries the seductive Sir Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston) and is swept away to his gothic mansion. Far from home and comfort, the naive Edith begins to see ghosts coming out of the woodwork — literally — and tries to unravel the mystery of this family she's married into.

Here's another Stephen King adaptation — only this time with help from his son, and fellow author, Joe Hill. One of the more obscure stories in King's arsenal,In the Tall Grassfollows a brother and sister as they venture into a field after hearing a young boy cry for help. They eventually realize there may be no way out. Filled with twists and turns, the film also features one of King's strongest endings ever.

Insidious

After settling into a new home with their three children, Josh (Patrick Wilson) and Renai's (Rose Byrne) eldest son falls off a ladder and slips into a coma. For months, doctors can't figure out what's wrong, as he doesn't show any signs of head trauma. With no answers, the parents take their son home to recover, but strange occurrences begin to take place. From shadowy figures to ghosts, the family soon learns that the paranormal activity going on in their home is all connected to their son's mysterious coma.

Prepare to never step foot in a circus again. In this 2017 adaptation of Stephen King's novel, the signature red balloon from Pennywise the clown isn't a friendly gesture. The story is set in the late 1980s in Derry, Maine, where young kids begin to disappear one by one. When a group of adolescents all witness the terrifying clown, they band together to destroy the shape-shifting monster preying on the small town.

Probably one of the most original horror films of the last decade,It Followsis a bombshell at movie-watching parties. The film depicts a murderous entity that, once sexually transmitted to you, won't stop following you until you're dead. Then the process repeats with the person who gave "it" to you. (Yes, you read that right.) Featuring one of the most outlandish concepts ever to be filmed,It Follows nails it in spades. Taking inspiration from John Carpenter films likeHalloween, this movie will easily be one of the most frightening you've ever seen. Also, the soundtrack is a veritable masterpiece.

If there's one thing Kodi Smit-McPhee looks for, it's roles where he exacts revenge on his enemies. Bullied and neglected at home, 12-year-old Owen (Smit-McPhee) passes time by plotting ways to get back at his tormentors. It's a horror masterpiece that'll be talked about for years to come, so please, we're begging, don't skip out on this one.

From Palme d'Or winner Julia Ducournau (Titane),Raw is an electric debut. It follows vegetarian Justine (Garance Marillier), who enrolls in a veterinary school notorious for hazing rituals and is forced to eat rabbit kidneys. A Nightmare on Elm Street

Wes Craven's 1984 supernatural slasher will quite literally keep you up at night. There's no such thing as a good night's rest for teenager Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp) and her friends, as each one of them dreams about a blade-clawed serial killer named Freddy Krueger chasing them. Freddy is more than just a nightmare, however, as he successfully kills his victims when they're deep in slumber. Nancy and her friends force themselves to stay awake in order to avoid his wrath, but they soon learn that it's not easy to outrun him even when they're awake. Truly the stuff of nightmares.

Hear us out: When disconnected from the main film franchise, theScreamTV series is actually quite the sleeper surprise, and it boasts all the hallmarks of the original films: teen drama, references to horror classics and lots (lots)of death. Sure, the first two seasons don't feature the iconic Ghostface or his voice (gotta wait until Season 3 for those), but the storylines areRiverdale-level addictive. Largely written off when it debuted, this is a fantastic series to revisit.

Homicide detectives David Mills (Brad Pitt) and William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) are on the hunt for a serial killer who chooses his victims based on the seven deadly sins he perceives they've committed. As the body count piles up in rapid succession, they move even closer to a gruesome fate neither of them saw coming.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)

Leatherface returns in the sequel to the classic 1974 slasher film — and this time, he's taking down urbanization one gentrifier at a time. When a group of young social media influencers and foodies travel to a Texas ghost town, they arrive bright-eyed and ready to capture content. Looking to transform the lone town into a social media paradise, the group's plans are disrupted when Leatherface emerges. He immediately falls back into his bloody past as he hunts the young crowd disrupting his hiding spot. We hope they snapped all their selfies first.
